Gambling is a playful activity which can be used for the entertainment and enjoyment of many people. However, participation in gambling activities can facilitate the development of problems whose consequences often go beyond the person directly affected. For these people the game ends up becoming a serious problem either because they play more frequently, more time, or more money than they can afford, developing what is called "problematic / pathological gambling" or "gambling addiction".
But why do these problematic gambling behaviors persist in some people despite the negative consequences they have in their lives?
The factors involved in the appearance and maintenance of game problems seem to be multiple and varied, being fundamentally framed in three large groups related to the characteristics of the player, the game and the environment. Although it is difficult to analyze these factors separately, given the interrelation between them, one of those considered especially relevant in the development of game problems are the player's thoughts or believes about the game and his possibilities of controlling or predicting the results. The outcomes obtained by our research team to identify the role of cognitive aspects related to problems associated with gambling are presenting.
What is the relevance of each of them in the development and maintenance of gambling problems? What variables differentiate a "normal" gambler from a "problem" or "pathological" gambler? The need to consider them in evaluation, treatment and follow-up tasks, as well as in prevention programs, is pointed out.
